Treatment for this condition needs to be planned on an individual basis and tailored to each woman's needs. Some patients are not able to have surgery or won't want surgery, while others will not tolerate various drug therapies. In some patients the treatment will be aimed at improving fertility whilst in others the treatment will be aimed at decreasing pain.

Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopy is generally performed with a a 10mm diameter telescope, but the Endometriosis Clinic Albury has a range of 2mm telescopes and instruments which are suitable for diagnosis and some treatments. These 2mm instruments require smaller (3mm) cuts and cause less post-operative pain. Laparoscopy allows better vision because it gets closer to the area and can magnify it, making the surgery much more precise.

Drug Therapy

Drug therapy is more effective in superficial or minor endometriosis, rather than deep invasive endometriosis. It is often used prior to and after surgery, as it may make the surgery easier and more effective. Side effects should be discussed prior to any drug therapy

Surgical Therapy

In some cases of mild, superficial endometriosis the areas can be burnt off with diathermy (electro surgery). More severe forms of endometriosis, such as larger nodules, endometriosis that has attached itself to other organs and tissues, or endometriomas of the ovary must be removed. This can require major surgery involving the uterus, ovaries, bowel, bladder and ureter and may involve prolonged surgery with two or more surgeons with special skills.
